Partner In Employment (PIE) is a new project with the mission of offering refugee and immigrants work support and mentoring that promotes employment, job retention and wage increment by matching the right employee with the right job.
New residents arrive with many strengths, yet many challenges too. They must adjust quickly to a new culture, a new language, and different employment norms—which has only grown more difficult in the climate of fear, intimidation, and prejudice engendered in some quarters of the public sphere by current official voices and policies.
Many refugees and immigrants arrive with low English language proficiency levels; with Seattle Public Schools reporting 43% below fluency, and 28% living in linguistically-isolated households. Further, data on refugee and immigrant adults aged 18-64 living in Seattle indicates that of those with Limited English Proficiency (LEP), only 14.2% are actively employed. Without employment, the newly arrived struggle to sustain stable housing for their families, making immanent homelessness one of the primary threats they face.
